Abstract
Various products of Nok-jub, a mixture juice of vegetables, have been used for chemoprevention. Particularly, Mil-sae-ssak-jub, a juice of sprouts of wheat (Triticum aestivum), is one of the popular Nok-jub and sprouts of wheat are rich in redox enzymes as well as other antioxidant compounds. Therefore, we investigated effects of the Mil-sae-ssak-jub on oxidative status through a short-term intervention study (n=14 of female nonsmokers; age, 24.4¡¾4.0 yrs). We administered the subjects 100 ml of the juice of wheat sprouts per day for 2 weeks and collected their urine samples at 0 and 3, 7,
and 14 days after intakes of wheat sprouts. Antioxidative effects of the juice were evaluated with oxidative stress biomarker, malondialdehyde (MDA). As results, we found the trend that levels of urinary MDA were reduced for 2 weeks, however, it was not statistically significant. In conclusion, the Mil-sae-ssakjub may have the potential of antioxidative actions. We also suggest future enlarged scaled studies with more sensitive biomarkers for antioxidative effects to support our results. (Cancer Prev Res 13, 137-141, 2008)
